The Gottman Method

Jim Ramsey is the only fully Certified Gottman Therapist in the state of Montana.  A marriage and family counselor for 40+ years, Jim has been involved with The Gottman Institute since 2004 and is a certified educator of the method for therapists.  Jim finds the pragmatic Gottman program to be a breakthrough for relationship-based counseling, and makes it a primary component of his counseling approach.

Dr. John Gottman has been studying couples and families for over four decades. Through analyzing thousands of interactions, he has scientifically determined the factors that produce long-lived harmonious relationships, and those behaviors that damage and eventually ruin relationships.  From this, he developed a practical and scientific therapy method for helping and strengthening relationships between committed couples, and between parents and children.  Dr. Gottman and his wife, Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman, created The Gottman Institute to provide training to health care professionals.

Well-known to consumers through his best-selling books, 'Why Marriages Succeed and Fail' and 'Raising An Emotionally Intelligent Child,'  Gottman's couples research received an entire section in Malcolm Gladwell's 2005 'Blink.'   "Gottman has proven something remarkable.  If he analyzes an hour of a husband and wife talking, he can predict with 95 percent accuracy whether the couple will still be married fifteen years later."
